Countdown to Munnar Mela: Arikomban Captured, Bringing Relief Ahead of the Grand Celebration!

Arikomban, the rice-loving wild elephant, finally captured and to be relocated before the Munnar Mela starts. Read about the months-long saga and the expert committee’s recommendation for its release in a different area. After months of uncertainties, protests, and legal battles, the Kerala Forest Department has successfully captured Arikomban, a wild elephant responsible for several human deaths near Munnar in Kerala’s Idukki District. The elephant, known as the rice tusker due to its penchant for raiding ration shops and houses in search of rice, has been a source of fear and unrest in the tribal village of 301 Colony. In February, the Kerala government issued an order to capture the rogue elephant, but the mission was halted by the Kerala High Court. The court questioned the government’s decision to resettle the tribals in an elephant habitat and formed an expert committee to find a solution. The expert committee recommended capturing Arikomban but proposed releasing it into the wild in a different area where it wouldn’t pose a threat to humans. The court accepted this recommendation and specified that Arikomban should be relocated to the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve in Palakkad district, equipped with a GPS radio collar to monitor its movements. While the Kerala government agreed to abide by the court’s order, the decision to relocate Arikomban to Parambikulam sparked protests from the locals there, who expressed concerns about potential havoc caused by the rogue elephant. Finally, on April 29th, 2023, Arikomban was captured in the Chinnakanel area and transported by forest officials in a lorry, putting an end to the saga surrounding this rice-loving wild elephant.

I recently attended the Munnar Mela and it was an absolutely amazing experience. The event was well-organized and had a festive atmosphere. The cultural performances were breathtaking, showcasing the traditional dances and music of the region. The food stalls offered a wide variety of delicious local delicacies, and the handicrafts on display were exquisite.
